Industrial Pump Tarp Covers from Drawings and Samples

Pump tarp covers should follow the pump, motor, baseplate and pipework—not just a rectangular footprint. Discuss custom PVC-coated fabric covers with DERFLEX for idle equipment storage, maintenance protection and project-specific transport programs.

Send a dimensioned drawing, annotated photos or an existing cover sample. We can review the material, split openings, reinforcement and closure details for a design that your team can fit, remove and reorder.

For pump OEMs, skid builders, maintenance teams and industrial distributors. Final construction and supply scope are confirmed against the application and approved sample.

What is an industrial pump tarp cover?

An industrial pump tarp cover is a removable flexible textile cover patterned around a pump assembly to help shield its exterior from rain, dust and storage contamination. Its performance depends on the fabric, seams, openings, drainage and restraint working together.

A fitted cover may protect the complete pump-and-motor skid, the exposed upper assembly or a selected component. For a broader comparison of equipment shapes and protection requirements, explore DERFLEX equipment tarp options.

Fit engineering / 01

A pump outline is not a cover pattern.

Start with one coordinate datum and mark every feature that changes how the cover goes on. Overall length, width and height establish the envelope; pipe connections, guards, terminals and lifting points establish the pattern.

Illustrative pump cover envelope and pipe opening layoutSide and plan views show an idle pump and motor on a baseplate. A dashed cover envelope leaves room around fittings. L, W and H are equipment measurements. Numbered callouts identify split pipe access, a pitched top, contact protection and lower restraint. SIDE VIEW / EQUIPMENT ENVELOPEPLAN VIEW / CONNECTION MAP LHLWL / W / H: measure the equipment; agree finished cover clearance separately.Datum: baseplate corner → X / Y / Z offsets 01020304

Illustrative configuration only; not a fabrication drawing or an operating approval. Dashed lines show a possible cover envelope. Final support, drainage, fit clearance and openings depend on the actual assembly.

01 / PIPE INTERFACES

Measure the flange, not just the pipe.

Record pipe OD, flange or valve envelope, centerline height and offset from the datum. A split collar or overlapping panel can allow fitting around connected pipework without forcing a small opening over a large flange.

02 / TOP GEOMETRY

Give runoff a route.

Agree a sloping top or suitable support where a flat span would collect rain. Place overlaps so runoff passes over the closure. Nozzle collars and inspection flaps need their own water-shedding detail.

03–04 / CONTACT & RESTRAINT

Separate wear points from fixing points.

Mark motor fins, baseplate corners and brackets for local protection. Route restraint through reinforced cover zones to approved anchors; do not use piping, cable glands or fragile instruments as tie-downs.

Minimum drawing scheduleEquipment model + revision · overall L × W × H · datum location · pipe / flange X-Y-Z offsets · removal direction · no-contact zones · anchor map · ground clearance · required inspection access

Where the scope also includes separate pipe ends or sleeves, compare pipe protection formats rather than extending one pump cover across unrelated components.

Material & construction / 02

Specify the assembly, not only the fabric weight.

Woven polyester supports the cover’s mechanical structure; the selected PVC coating provides the weather-facing barrier and a surface suitable for compatible welding. Compare DERFLEX PVC-coated polyester material options before fixing the cover construction.

Application decisions / 03

Match the cover to the pump’s next job.

Use scenarioConstruction priorityQuestion that decides the design
Warehouse spare pumpRemovable dust cover; manageable handling weight; visible equipment ID.How will staff inspect and preserve the pump without losing its identification?
Outdoor idle skidWeather-facing fabric, planned runoff, protected openings and controlled ventilation.Where do rain and trapped moisture leave the covered assembly?
Installed pump during shutdownSplit panels around fixed pipework; accessible inspection points; clear removal sequence. Can the cover be removed without disconnecting pipes or disturbing instruments?
Transport to a project siteMapped restraint, contact protection, reduced loose fabric and clearly separated lifting access. Will the cover face open-road airflow, handling abrasion or only enclosed shipment?
Repeat OEM cover programControlled drawing revision, approved fit sample, model labels and consistent packing.Which pump variants share a pattern, and which require separate covers?

Before fitting: operating condition takes priority.

Keep motor air paths, coupling guards, hot surfaces, drains, leak-observation points and safety devices unobstructed. For general storage covers, plan removal before operation. Do not cover an automatically starting standby pump unless the equipment maker and responsible site engineer have approved that specific arrangement.

Waterproof fabric still needs a moisture plan.

Temperature cycling and retained moisture can wet an assembly beneath a waterproof cover. Discuss protected ventilation paths, ground clearance and inspection access within the pump manufacturer’s storage plan. A tarp does not replace port closures, preservation treatment or specified storage conditions.

Transport needs its own approval.

A storage cover is not automatically suitable for highway exposure. Check the restraint, flutter, rubbing and removal sequence for the shipment. The cover is not a lifting sling or cargo restraint, and should not carry the pump’s load.

Sample development / 04

Approve the fit before approving the batch.

An existing sample helps explain the shape, but the equipment remains the reference. Mark wear, shrinkage, field cuts and troublesome closures on the old cover so they are corrected in the next revision.

01 / DEFINE

Freeze the cover scope

Identify the exact pump model, covered area, pipe-connected condition, supply format and exposure.

02 / DETAIL

Review the pattern

Agree clearances, seam positions, split panels, collars, anchors and the installation sequence.

03 / TRIAL

Check a physical sample

Fit on the representative assembly. Check openings, closures, contact points, removal and runoff.

04 / RELEASE

Record the approved revision

Retain the material reference, drawing, sample comments, identification and packing requirements.

Put acceptance checks in the purchase specification.

  • Dimensional fit and usable closure travel on the actual pump variant.
  • No unplanned tension on piping, wiring, gauges or projecting components.
  • Reinforcement aligned with the approved contact and restraint map.
  • Agreed checks for seams, opening details and water shedding.
  • Correct material, size label, drawing revision and packing identification.

Three purchasing errors to avoid

Ordering by motor power: pumps with the same rating can have different footprints and connection positions.

Adding clearance twice: identify whether dimensions describe the equipment or the finished cover.

Copying every old detail: a field-modified sample may preserve the very fit problems you want to solve.

For options covering other equipment in the same project, review custom machinery cover supply. Keep pump-specific connection and revision requirements on this cover’s own drawing.

Procurement / 05

Send a cover brief that can be quoted.

DERFLEX’s coated-fabric and custom tarpaulin supply lets buyers discuss the textile and the converted cover together. Specify whether your team needs roll material, pre-cut panels or a finished pump cover. The broader made-to-order tarpaulin service outlines the available customization direction.

What changes a custom pump cover price?

Pattern complexity, material structure, total panel area, opening count, reinforcement, closure hardware, quantity and packaging all affect the quotation. A dimensioned layout is more useful than asking for a price per square metre without construction details.

Confirm the supply details in writing.

Request sample arrangements, MOQ, production schedule, export packing and any required test documentation for your selected design. These are confirmed per inquiry; a general material range does not establish a fixed finished-cover specification or delivery promise.

Chemical splash, corrosive vapors, hazardous-area use, freeze protection and thermal insulation require separate assessment. Ordinary PVC tarp construction does not establish those functions.

Related questions

Industrial pump cover questions, answered.

Can you develop a pump cover from an existing sample?

Yes, an existing cover can be a development reference. Send photographs, the pump model, current equipment dimensions and the changes you need. An old cover may have stretched, shrunk or been modified, so confirm the pattern against the equipment and approve a trial fit before repeat production.

Can a tarp cover stay on a running industrial pump?

Treat a general tarp cover as removable storage protection. Operating-pump use needs a separate review by the equipment manufacturer and site engineering team for motor cooling, heat, moving parts, leakage, inspection and emergency access. A vent flap alone does not establish suitability for operation.

Are pump tarp covers waterproof and condensation-free?

A suitable PVC-coated fabric can provide a waterproof material barrier, but the finished cover also depends on seams, closures, pipe openings and drainage. Waterproof fabric does not eliminate condensation. Specify moisture management and follow the pump manufacturer’s storage and preservation instructions.

Which GSM is suitable for a heavy duty pump cover?

There is no universal pump-cover GSM. DERFLEX publishes PVC-coated polyester material families around 450–900 gsm; final selection also depends on base-cloth strength, coating adhesion, cover size, handling, abrasion and outdoor exposure. Confirm the material code and required test results rather than approving weight alone.

How do you fit a cover around connected suction and discharge pipes?

Record pipe outside diameters, flange envelopes and their positions from a common datum. A split panel, overlapping collar or removable section can allow installation around connected pipework. Agree the installation route and rain-shedding overlap on the drawing; a small circular hole may not pass over a larger flange.

What determines price, MOQ, sampling and lead time?

The quotation depends on the approved geometry, material, reinforcement, opening details, closure hardware, quantity and packing requirements. Provide the destination and required delivery date with the inquiry. Sample arrangements, MOQ and lead time must be confirmed by DERFLEX for the selected design; no fixed values apply to every pump cover.
