Direct Answer
What Is a PVC Water Bladder Tank?
A PVC water bladder is a closed flexible storage tank made from polyester-reinforced PVC coated fabric and welded into a leak-resistant container.
Unlike a rigid tank, the bladder folds flat or into a compact package when empty and expands as it fills. The reinforced textile carries mechanical load, while the PVC coating provides the waterproof and weldable surface. Most buying decisions should therefore consider tank geometry, fabric construction, seam design, valve reinforcement, ground protection and the actual stored medium together.
Why Use a Flexible Water Bladder?
A water bladder is especially useful where a permanent rigid tank is unnecessary, difficult to transport or too bulky to store between projects.
Portable: compact when empty and easier to transport than rigid tanks of the same usable volume.
Fast deployment: suitable for temporary project water, emergency response and seasonal agriculture.
Closed storage: better contamination control than open-top tanks when the correct material and fittings are used.
Custom footprint: dimensions can be developed around available site space.
Custom connections: inlet, outlet and vent layout can match the user's hose and pump system.
OEM-ready: color, logo, accessories and export packing can be standardized for distributors.

Shape & Geometry
PVC Water Bladder Shapes for Different Storage Jobs
Bladder geometry changes filled height, ground footprint, seam stress and how the tank behaves during filling. Choose shape before finalizing material thickness.
01
Pillow Water Bladder
The classic closed flexible bladder. It expands into a low-profile pillow form and is widely used for temporary bulk water storage.
Low-profile filled shape
Compact folded size
Good for large water volumes
Custom hose connections
02
Rectangular / Square Bladder
A more controlled footprint for applications where floor space, truck-bed area or container dimensions must be considered before fabrication.
Defined footprint
Useful for equipment integration
Custom dimensions
Multiple fitting locations
03
Vehicle / Mobile Water Bladder
Flexible bladders can support remote water transport on suitable vehicle platforms. Restraint, load movement, road conditions and local transport requirements must be reviewed separately.
Remote water transport
Compact empty return volume
Custom footprint for platform space
Reinforced connection zones
04
Compact Portable Bladder
Smaller capacity units can support service crews, agriculture, maintenance work and emergency kits where storage space is limited.
05
Large Bulk Water Bladder
Higher-capacity bladders are used for temporary reserve and project water, but require more detailed review of filled dimensions, site loading, valve flow and seam stress.
06
Custom OEM Bladder
DERFLEX can discuss non-standard dimensions, connection layout, branding and packing for distributors, contractors and repeat project procurement.
Capacity Planning
How to Select PVC Water Bladder Capacity
Capacity is only the first number. The same volume can be built with different length, width and filled-height relationships, which changes footprint, seam loading and handling.
Capacity Direction

DERFLEX legacy flexible-bladder references include very broad capacity ranges. For larger projects, use the quotation / technical drawing as the controlling specification rather than assuming every historical maximum applies to every bladder geometry.
Manufacturing Detail
HF Welding Matters More Than a “Waterproof Fabric” Claim
A water bladder is only as reliable as the relationship between coated fabric, seam design and fitting reinforcement.
Material surface: PVC coating must be compatible with the welding process.
Seam width: should be selected around bladder size and local stress.
Process control: HF / RF welding parameters must be validated for the selected coated fabric.
Corner transitions: geometry should avoid concentrated stress where practical.
Valve reinforcement: inlet / outlet areas need dedicated reinforcement because hoses and pumps add local load.
Inspection: workmanship, seams and fitting attachment should be checked before packing.
DERFLEX Existing Product Reference
DERFLEX publishes a 2 m3 flexible bladder example with:
Size: 2.8 m × 2.2 m
Filled height: approximately 0.5 m
Material: 0.9 mm double-sided PVC coated material
Volume: 2 cubic meters
Process: high-frequency welding
Use this as a product reference—not as a universal specification for every capacity.
Valve Configuration
Design the Valve Layout Around Filling, Use and Drainage
Valve positions should be decided before cutting and welding. A generic inlet / outlet layout can create difficult filling, incomplete drainage or unnecessary hose stress.
Fill InletSpecify hose or pump connection, expected fill rate and whether top or side access is preferred.
Discharge OutletSize the outlet for practical drainage time and the downstream hose / pump system.
Air VentA vent may be required to manage air movement during filling and draining of a closed bladder.
Thread / Flange / CouplingSend the required connection standard so the factory can match fitting type and reinforcement.
Reinforcement PatchConnection zones should distribute stress into the bladder body rather than concentrate load at one edge.
Hose SupportHeavy hoses should be supported independently so they do not pull continuously on the bladder fitting.
Application Matching
PVC Water Bladder Applications
A
Agriculture & Irrigation
Temporary irrigation reserve, livestock water, remote field supply and seasonal storage where the empty tank must pack down between uses.
B
Construction Water
Site water, dust suppression, wash-down, concrete-related operations and temporary water reserve for remote projects.
C
Emergency Water Storage
Rapid-deployment reserve for disrupted infrastructure, relief operations and temporary camps. Required water-contact standards should be specified in advance.

Installation
Ground Preparation Protects the Bladder
Once filled, the bladder presses continuously against the supporting surface. Sharp debris and rough concrete can damage even reinforced material.
Use a level and stable area large enough for the fully filled footprint.
Remove stones, roots, screws, metal scraps and other sharp debris.
Use a suitable groundsheet when abrasion or puncture is possible.
Do not drag a full or partially filled bladder.
Support hoses to reduce pulling force on fittings.
Keep the tank away from uncontrolled vehicle movement and sharp equipment.
A flexible bladder changes shape as it fills, so the deployment area must be prepared for the full footprint—not the folded size.
Compatibility
Do Not Use One PVC Bladder Specification for Every Liquid
The old DERFLEX page listed many food and industrial liquids broadly. The safer procurement approach is to approve the exact coated fabric and fittings for the actual liquid and compliance requirement.
General water: confirm storage duration, UV exposure, temperature and cleaning cycle.
Potable water: require the specific destination-market potable-water / food-contact standard.
Wastewater: provide pH, temperature, solids / contaminants and cleaning chemistry.
Chemicals / fuels: provide exact composition and concentration; never assume standard PVC compatibility.

A PVC water bladder is a closed flexible storage tank made from reinforced PVC coated fabric. It folds compactly when empty and expands as it fills, making it suitable for portable and temporary water storage.
What is the difference between a PVC water bladder and a flexible water tank?
“Flexible water tank” is the wider category. A PVC water bladder is a specific closed tank format within that category, typically made from PVC coated reinforced textile and welded into a pillow or rectangular shape.
How are PVC water bladders welded?
PVC coated fabrics can be joined using high-frequency / RF welding when the material construction is compatible. DERFLEX publishes a 2 m3 bladder example made from 0.9 mm double-sided PVC coated material using high-frequency welding.
How large can a PVC water bladder be?
Flexible bladder capacities can range from compact portable units to large bulk-storage systems. The practical maximum for a project depends on tank geometry, filled height, site footprint, material construction, seam loading, valve flow and ground conditions.
Can DERFLEX customize bladder dimensions?
Yes. Send the required usable volume and maximum available length, width and filled height. DERFLEX can discuss a suitable bladder geometry and connection layout for the available space.
What valves are used on water bladder tanks?
Inlet, outlet, vent, threaded fittings, flanges and hose / pump couplings can be selected according to the filling and discharge system. Fitting zones should be reinforced because hose weight and flow can create local stress.
Can PVC water bladders be used outdoors?
Yes, appropriate PVC coated fabric can be used outdoors. UV exposure, temperature, ground condition, expected service cycle and protective groundsheet should be specified when choosing the material and bladder construction.
Can a PVC water bladder store drinking water?
Only when the selected PVC material, fittings and finished bladder meet the required potable-water or food-contact standard for the destination market. Do not assume that every industrial PVC bladder is drinking-water approved.
Can PVC bladders store chemicals or fuel?
Compatibility must be evaluated for the exact chemical or fuel. Provide composition, concentration, pH, temperature and contact duration. A standard PVC water bladder should not be assumed suitable for every solvent, fuel or chemical.
Do I need a groundsheet under a water bladder?
A groundsheet or suitable protective layer is strongly recommended whenever the surface is rough, abrasive or may contain stones, metal fragments or sharp debris. The site should be level and stable before filling.
What information should I send for a water bladder quote?
Send the stored water / liquid, required capacity, maximum footprint, preferred shape, temperature, valve / connection details, site surface, deployment cycle, quantity, OEM requirements and delivery destination.
