What are body
shop curtains?

Body shop curtains are flexible partitions that divide an automotive repair facility into work bays. Often made with reinforced vinyl and clear viewing panels, they can slide aside for vehicle access and close to help limit the spread of sanding debris between work areas.

A curtain is part of a work-zone plan. Dust extraction, airflow and access control determine the result. Spray finishing and hot work require separate process-specific assessment.
Start with the repair process

One workshop.
Different curtain duties.

Auto body shop curtains work best when the specification follows the job in each bay. Tell us what happens behind the panel before choosing weight or thickness.

For broader factory separation, explore the industrial curtain range. This guide focuses on collision repair access, observation and panel maintenance.

  1. 01

    Sanding & preparation bays

Plan the curtain around the extraction points and air path. Keep the working boundary continuous without obstructing the designed ventilation. See the dust containment design guide for edge and airflow considerations.

  2. 02

    Vehicle service & estimating

Prioritize a clear entry opening, observation across the bay and a parking position for the retracted panel. Keep fabric away from lift arms, tools and vehicle doors.

  3. 03

    Wash & detailing areas

Specify actual cleaners, splash exposure and the lower interface. Coordinate drainage separately; review wash bay curtain material selection when repeated washdown is involved.

Material selection

Put strength where it carries load.
Visibility where people need it.

A transparent panel and a reinforced curtain body solve different problems. Specify each zone, then approve how the materials join and move together.

Reinforced curtain body

Discuss the woven base, coating, color, usable width and welding behavior. Converters can start with the PVC-coated fabric category.

Clear viewing section

Confirm thickness, clarity and joining compatibility by sample. Review the published clear PVC curtain film options.

Read the units correctly. A mil is 0.001 inch: 20 mil = 0.508 mm; 30 mil = 0.762 mm. These are thickness conversions, not DERFLEX stock promises or fire-performance ratings. GSM describes mass per area, not the same property as thickness.
Layout & daily access

Design the opening
before the panel.

A retractable body shop curtain needs room to gather. The track length, the finished curtain width and the clear vehicle opening are different dimensions.

  1. A

    Mark the vehicle envelope

Include mirrors, opened doors, lift movement and technician circulation. Locate the curtain parking area beyond the required vehicle opening.

  2. B

    Choose how each side opens

Decide which panels slide, which remain fixed and where personnel pass. Mark wall returns, corner overlaps and closures on the same plan.

  3. C

    Separate fabric and hardware scope

Ask the track supplier to confirm supported loads, brackets, hangers, corner geometry and end stops. State explicitly whether your RFQ covers fabric, finished panels or a coordinated system.

Explore the boundary

Three-sided: plan both corner interfaces and an unobstructed front opening. Confirm where each movable panel gathers.

This sketch compares boundaries. It does not specify a complete containment or ventilation system.

01 / Upper interface

Track, suspension & valance

Record the supporting structure and lowest service. Confirm the roller drop before calculating panel height. Coordinate an upper closure with the ventilation design where needed.

02 / Moving interfaces

Corners, joins & pull edges

Place high-use openings where they avoid equipment. Select overlap, hook-and-loop or zipper details by access frequency, contamination and cleaning rather than appearance alone.

03 / Floor interface

Clearance, weight & sweep

A weighted hem can help control drape. A sweep changes the floor gap but can add drag. Avoid long loose hems that snag wheels, tools or feet; approve the detail on the actual floor.

Material approval & fabrication

Approve the interfaces.
Then approve the order.

DERFLEX's coated-fabric and curtain material range gives importers, fabricators and project buyers a basis for discussing custom PVC curtain programs. Make the order reproducible with a drawing and an agreed sample.

  • Material sample: review drape, visibility, color and the proposed cleaning method.
  • Fabrication sample: check the clear-to-opaque joint, reinforced upper edge and high-use closure.
  • Panel acceptance: agree finished dimensions, window location, seam continuity and attachment positions.
  • Packing plan: identify each panel by bay and orientation; agree how clear sections will be protected in transit.

Match any flame-propagation report to the supplied materials. NFPA 701 is a textile/film test, not approval of a complete spray booth. Ordinary clear PVC is not a welding radiation screen.

Procurement / from drawing to quotation

Send a clearer brief.
Get a more useful quotation.

Specify whether you need bulk roll material, OEM curtain panels or project-sized automotive shop dividers. A simple plan with the following details is more useful than a floor-area figure alone.

  1. Process and layout: sanding, prep, service or washdown; a sketch showing each side and every opening.
  2. Reference dimensions: track runs, suspension level, floor profile, clear opening and parking space.
  3. Material construction: opaque body, clear band, approved thickness or GSM and any reference sample.
  4. Operating conditions: opening frequency, cleaning, chemicals, temperature and nearby work.
  5. Acceptance and shipment: documentation, quantity, destination and required delivery date.

Supply boundary: state if track, brackets, rollers, installation or site engineering are required. Confirm inclusions explicitly; the material quotation should not be assumed to include them.

Avoid this buying error

Ordering by bay width alone

Fabric width may include overlaps and gathering allowances. Approve the finished panel sizes and the clear opening separately.

Avoid this buying error

Locating the window by habit

A standard-looking band may sit behind a vehicle body or below the useful sightline. Draw the viewing zone at its intended installed height.

Avoid this buying error

Approving only the fabric

The hanging edge, window joint, lower hem and access closure carry different duties. Review the fabricated details as well as the roll sample.

Questions before purchase

Body shop
curtain FAQ.

Practical answers for automotive facilities, contractors, importers and curtain fabricators.

What are body shop curtains used for?

Body shop curtains divide collision repair facilities into flexible work bays. They help separate sanding and preparation work from cleaner areas while allowing panels to open for vehicles. Effective dust control also depends on source extraction, airflow, panel closures and operating practices.

Which material should I choose: reinforced vinyl or clear PVC?

Use reinforced PVC-coated polyester where the panel needs a woven load-bearing structure, durable edges or an opaque lower section. Use clear flexible PVC where observation is needed. A mixed construction can place transparency at the required sightline while retaining reinforced hanging and lower zones.

Can body shop curtains replace a paint spray booth?

A general-purpose curtain partition does not establish an approved spray booth. Spray finishing requires a process-specific review of ventilation, ignition control, construction, fire protection and local requirements. Confirm the complete installation with the responsible designer and authority before specifying a curtain for spraying.

Does an NFPA 701 report mean the whole curtain system is approved?

No. NFPA 701 concerns flame propagation testing of textiles and films under specified conditions. A report must match the material being supplied; it does not by itself approve a complete body shop enclosure, spray-finishing process or installation.

How do I measure custom body shop curtains?

Record each track run, the suspension reference, the floor profile and the required clear vehicle opening. Mark corners, services, doors and the curtain parking space. Agree roller drop, floor clearance, overlaps and finished panel dimensions on the drawing before production.

Can I use ordinary clear vinyl next to welding?

Ordinary clear PVC should not be treated as a welding radiation screen or hot-work shield. Identify the welding, spark and heat exposure separately and specify purpose-selected protective screens and separation for that process.

How much do custom body shop curtains cost, and what is the MOQ?

Price and MOQ depend on whether you purchase roll material or fabricated panels, the selected construction, panel area, window layout, closures, reinforcement, quantity and packaging. Ask DERFLEX to confirm sample terms, documentation, hardware scope and lead time in the written quotation.

How should vinyl body shop curtains be cleaned?

Remove loose contamination without scratching the window, then use a material-approved cleaning method. Trial a mild cleaner on a sample before routine use. Do not assume paint thinner or a strong degreaser is compatible with the coating, clear film, seams or closures. Inspect hanging points and worn lower edges during cleaning.
