Roll Up Tarp Bend Radius and Roller Diameter
A roll-up tarp must work with its tube, sleeve and complete travel path. The tarp roller diameter alone cannot qualify a PVC cover for repeated use.
For trailer-cover OEMs, curtain fabricators and replacement programs, DERFLEX can review PVC coated fabric, pocket construction and reinforcement against your hardware drawing. Send the roller section, sleeve detail and motion path to define a sample and validation brief.

RECORD THE COMPLETE ASSEMBLY.
The direct answer
PVC tarp bend radiusWhat roller diameter does a PVC tarp need?
There is no universal acceptable roller diameter for every PVC tarp. Use the actual fabric and finished pocket assembly to validate the smallest contact curve, operating temperature, tension and roll-up cycle duty. A smooth round tube has an inside contact radius of approximately half its outside diameter, but seams, folds, guides and fasteners can create much tighter local bends.
01 / Understand the contact
The smallest local curve can govern the result.
On an ideal smooth tube, the tarp follows the tube surface. In a real system, a sleeve fold, weld step, trapped wrinkle or guide edge can change that shape. Review every contact through deployment and retraction, including any reverse bend.
For material selection, start with the chosen PVC tarpaulin construction: coating formulation, textile reinforcement, measured thickness and finish all belong in the approval record. GSM describes mass per area; it does not establish a bend limit.
- D / Tube outside diameter
- Actual measured diameter at the tarp contact surface, including any permanent sleeve or covering.
- Rᵢ / Inside contact radius
- Approximately D ÷ 2 only where the fabric conforms smoothly to a circular tube.
- t / Local assembly thickness
- Body fabric, welded overlap and pocket reinforcement have different layer builds.
- Local bend condition
- The actual curvature and loading where the moving fabric meets a fold, seam or guide.
02 / Specify the mechanism
Measure the tube. Map the travel. Identify the layers.
A nominal pipe size or a photograph of the rolled cover is insufficient. Record the as-built geometry at both ends and across the working width. Dimensions and tolerances must come from the actual system drawing and measurement.
| Item | Record on the drawing | What the review must resolve |
|---|---|---|
| Roller contact surface | Measured OD, section shape, surface covering, joints, runout, support span and any exposed fitting. | Actual contact geometry, straight tracking and local raised or sharp features. |
| Travel & guides | Roller centerline, deployed and stored positions, guide profiles and edge radii, offsets and reverse-bend locations. | Small local curves, pinching, oblique entry and contact that appears only mid-travel. |
| Pocket & connection | Usable internal lay-flat width and datum, seam width, openings, end stops, insertion fittings and attachment arrangement. | Insertion clearance, torque transfer, retention and pocket movement during rolling. |
| Fabric & built details | Grade and lot ID, measured thickness, GSM, coating face, warp/weft direction, weld map and reinforcement stack. | Whether the trial represents the construction being ordered, including the stiffest zones. |
| Operating duty | Handling temperature range, tension or load range, speed, stroke, dwell, starts/stops and required cycles. | Conditions for qualification rather than a diameter quoted without an operating envelope. |
| Rolled envelope | Maximum wound diameter, lateral clearance, housing clearance and measured high spots at seams or hems. | Room for the complete roll under permitted operating conditions, including uneven build. |
For a trailer replacement, compare these inputs with the complete grain trailer roll-tarp layout. Tube geometry does not replace cover width, overlap or bow-contact measurements.
03 / Match the roller sleeve
A pocket must fit, transfer motion and wind evenly.
A sleeve that accepts the tube can still roll poorly. State whether the fabric is fixed to the tube, moves around an insert or uses a proprietary groove, clamp or spline. The mechanism determines the connection; pocket friction alone is not a defined drive arrangement.
Agree the measurement datum
Separate usable internal lay-flat width, seam-to-fold width and cut width. Show whether the finished cover dimension includes the pockets and how it changes when the inserts are fitted.
Trial the complete insertion path
Check the largest fitting that must pass through, end openings, seam intrusion and the actual fabric thickness. Include end retention, removal access and the chosen fastening detail.
Observe the full-width roll
Watch for sleeve bunching, skew, rubbing and uneven layer build. A short pocket coupon checks local fit; it cannot establish full-length alignment or rolled clearance.
04 / Find the crease mechanism
Read the damage pattern before adding fabric weight.
A larger roller does not correct every crease. Use the location and timing of the first visible change to choose a design revision. The observations below guide investigation; they are not a diagnosis from appearance alone.
| Observed pattern | Inspect first | Candidate change to validate |
|---|---|---|
| One repeated sharp line | A trapped fold, guide edge, incorrect entry angle or stored crease returning each cycle. | Correct the path or contact profile and verify the fold no longer reforms. |
| Change beside a weld | Weld step, overlap orientation, stiff transition and seam position around the roller. | Review seam placement and the qualified joining process on the actual grade. |
| Pocket-end abrasion or tearing | Tube end shape, exposed fasteners, axial movement, cut-outs and end retention. | Revise the contact or local protection while preserving access and clearance. |
| Wrinkles grow toward one side | Tube straightness, supports, pocket alignment, edge build and lateral tracking. | Correct alignment or layer distribution; repeat the full-width trial. |
| Whitening, cracking or leakage | Exact layer and face, prior aging, handling temperature and local curvature. | Record the change, investigate coating or substrate damage and compare with controls. |
Extra reinforcement may protect a wear point while creating a thicker roll ridge. Review reinforced-edge construction together with the moving contact, rather than adding layers without a roll trial.

05 / Qualify the actual combination
Define a minimum acceptable bend condition through a repeatable trial.
An acceptable condition is a documented combination of material, geometry, environment and duty that meets agreed criteria. A passing candidate does not prove the absolute minimum diameter, and a cycle count does not establish outdoor service years.
Freeze the specimen and the drawing revision
Identify the material grade and batch, coating face, textile direction, measured thickness and finished dimensions. Record the actual tube and guide dimensions, weld map, pocket section, reinforcements and fasteners. Use production-representative fabricated samples; agree the number of assemblies and retain matched controls for any destructive comparison.
Set the duty and acceptance criteria before running
Document conditioning temperature and duration, actual specimen temperature, speed, tension or load, stroke, direction and dwell. Define one cycle as the stored roll moving to the full deployed datum and returning to the same stored datum, unless another definition is explicitly agreed. Specify target cycles, inspection intervals, stop conditions and permitted cosmetic changes in advance.
Run the complete motion path
Use the intended supported span and contact details. Log completed cycles and interruptions; record whether the tarp winds evenly and whether seams, sleeves or guides generate a recurring crease. Test the lowest required handling temperature and other relevant conditions under an agreed plan. If aged or contaminated service matters, define that exposure separately and identify its samples.
Compare defined locations before and after
Photograph the same marked zones with a scale and controlled lighting. Inspect both faces, pocket folds, seam edges and reinforcement transitions. Record cracking, coating separation, abrasion, permanent creases and dimensional changes. Add leak, seam or other mechanical checks when required, using the agreed method, sample count and matched controls.
Report the tested envelope and release decision
State the tested dimensions and conditions, achieved cycles, specimen-by-specimen observations, failures and the acceptance decision. Report a completed run as “no defined failure observed through the recorded cycles,” not an unlimited-life claim. Requalify changes to material, weld layout, pocket build, hardware or the motion path when they affect the approved condition.
What a usable validation record contains
Keep the result traceable to the purchased assembly. The blank record template in the download package contains no illustrative pass values.
- Drawing ID/revision, dated dimensions, material grade, lot and sample IDs.
- Tube OD, guide-contact profiles, pocket dimensions and rolled clearances.
- Actual temperature, conditioning, load, speed, cycle definition and inspection schedule.
- Target and achieved cycles, sample count, interruptions and first-damage observations.
- Before/after photographs, raw measurements, test methods and agreed acceptance limits.
- Responsible evaluator, decision date and the exact approved operating envelope.
Material tests support the review; they do not replace the mechanism trial. ISO 7854 addresses coated-fabric resistance to repeated flexing. Its laboratory flex methods are distinct from this project-specific roll-up protocol. For seam evaluation, use the PVC tarp seam qualification guide; for winter handling, review cold-crack testing and handling conditions. A listed test reference is not a claim that the proposed assembly has passed it.
06 / Start with three drawings
Send the roller, pocket and motion path.
DERFLEX supplies PVC coated fabric and custom tarp fabrication options. A drawing-based enquiry helps define the material, finished cover scope and representative sample before repeat-order production.
State whether you need roll goods, cut panels or finished covers. Roller hardware, drive design and installation scope must be agreed separately. MOQ, sample arrangements, price and lead time are confirmed against the selected specification.

Roller diameter and bend-radius FAQ
Is there a universal minimum tarp roller diameter?
No. The acceptable diameter depends on the actual PVC coated fabric, pocket and seam construction, contact path, temperature, tension and cycle duty. Qualify the selected assembly against agreed criteria; a generic tube diameter cannot approve every tarp.
Is PVC tarp bend radius always half the roller diameter?
Only the inside contact radius of fabric conforming smoothly to a circular tube is approximately half the tube’s actual outside diameter. A fold, guide edge, raised fixing or seam transition can impose a smaller local curve elsewhere in the assembly.
How should the roller pocket size be specified?
Give the measured tube OD and largest passing fitting, then define the usable internal lay-flat width and its datum. Show the seam, openings, local layers and retention. Approve insertion and rolling on the actual hardware rather than relying on a circumference calculation alone.
Does a heavier PVC tarp need a larger roller?
GSM alone cannot answer that question. Local thickness, coating flexibility, textile construction and added layers affect bending and roll build. Compare production-representative assemblies; check housing clearance and drive compatibility if the tube or material changes.
Can welded seams and reinforced pockets be rolled repeatedly?
They may be suitable when their construction and position are qualified for the duty. The trial must include the actual overlap, pocket and reinforcement transitions. A body-fabric flex result does not establish repeated rolling performance of these built details.
What evidence should support a roll-up tarp approval?
Use a dimensioned mechanism drawing, identified material and samples, defined temperature, load, speed and cycle conditions, recorded observations and before/after photographs. Include agreed functional or mechanical checks and report achieved cycles, sample count, failures and acceptance limits.
