The Essential Answer

What is a round tarp?

A round tarp is a circular protective sheet, measured by its finished diameter. It can be fabricated from waterproof PVC-coated fabric, woven PE, mesh or other flexible materials, with an edge designed for ropes, straps, grommets or a dedicated frame.

Unlike rectangular tarps, a round cover must distribute fastening points around a curved perimeter. The finished diameter, overlap, hem construction and tie-down spacing should be agreed before production—not estimated from an untrimmed fabric blank.

DERFLEX supports made-to-measure tarp fabrication in addition to its established custom tarp manufacturing program. This page focuses specifically on circular geometry and its effect on coverage, welding, hardware and purchasing decisions.

01 / Choose the Construction

The right circular cover starts with the material.

Waterproofing, repeated handling and ventilation call for different tarp structures. Not every circular cover should use the same fabric.

01 — INDUSTRIAL WATERPROOF

Heavy-duty PVC vinyl round tarps

Reinforced PVC-coated polyester is a practical direction for reusable outdoor circular covers. Discuss coating weight, welded seams, cleanability, UV exposure and abrasion where durability matters.

Best fit

Equipment tops, industrial circular platforms, long-use outdoor covers and specified OEM programs.

For base fabric structure and finish options, see DERFLEX PVC tarpaulin materials.

02 — LIGHTWEIGHT TEMPORARY

PE round tarps

Woven polyethylene tarps can be economical for seasonal or light-duty coverage. Evaluate weight, UV treatment, seam construction and reinforcement rather than assuming all PE sheets are identical.

Best fit

Temporary covering, distribution programs and cost-sensitive applications with controlled handling.

Compare material families in the tarp material selection guide.

03 — AIRFLOW & SHADE

Mesh circular tarps

Coated mesh allows air and water to pass through. It can be useful for shade, containment or wind reduction where ventilation is essential. Mesh should not be specified as a waterproof roof.

Best fit

Ventilated agricultural uses, selected outdoor enclosures and shade-oriented projects.

The mesh openness, attachment geometry and required wind behavior must be assessed together.

How to decide: If the requirement is rain protection with repeat outdoor handling, start the discussion with PVC coated polyester. If budget and temporary service dominate, evaluate PE. If airflow or drainage is necessary, evaluate mesh—without claiming waterproof performance.
02 / Geometry Before Production

How to measure a round tarp diameter.

The number buyers give as “size” is often the size of the object, not the required diameter of the finished circular cover. These are different dimensions.

Flat circular coverage

Finished tarp diameter

D = object diameter
+ 2 × desired overlap

Use this relationship for a flat circular area where the tarp extends beyond the object on both sides. Both dimensions must use the same unit.

For a round raised object

Add the intended side drop and fastening allowance on both sides to the horizontal top span. Curved or domed shapes may require a shaped pattern or on-site measurement.

Always identify whether the dimension is the finished outside diameter after hems, not the cutting blank.

Worked example: circular equipment cover

Suppose the equipment top measures 10 ft across, and the tarp needs 1 ft of perimeter allowance on every side.

  • Object diameter: 10 ft
  • Allowance: 1 ft each side
  • Specified flat finished diameter: 12 ft
  • Perimeter length: π × 12 ≈ 37.7 ft
  • Covered flat surface area: π × 6² ≈ 113.1 sq ft

For tie-downs with a target spacing no greater than 24 in (2 ft) along the perimeter, at least 19 evenly spaced grommets are required geometrically: ceil(37.7 ÷ 2) = 19. Use a practical symmetrical count (for example, 20) when the anchor positions allow. Actual spacing and reinforcement still depend on loads and anchor locations.

A dome or conical mound cannot be sized accurately from a single top-view diameter. Provide height, slope and whether the cover must reach the ground or only protect the crown.

16 ft8 ft201.1 sq ft50.3 ft26
20 ft10 ft314.2 sq ft62.8 ft32

*Indicative arithmetic count = ceiling(perimeter ÷ 2 ft). Does not replace anchor mapping, load assessment, manufacturing approval or grommet pull-out testing. Use equal arc spacing, not equal straight-line distances between points.

03 / The Perimeter Is the Critical Detail

Grommets, hems and seam paths for circular tarps.

A strong tarp can still fail where perimeter load is concentrated. Circular covers need an engineered load path all the way around the rim.

A / EDGE SYSTEM

Continuous reinforcement

Specify the hem width and whether the edge uses folded PVC, compatible webbing, an enclosed rope or additional reinforcement strips. The purpose is to distribute tension instead of transferring it into a narrow cut edge.

B / ANCHOR GEOMETRY

True round grommet spacing

On a circular perimeter, pitch should be defined as the distance along the arc. Map grommets to usable anchors; equally spaced eyelets may be inappropriate if the equipment anchor points are not symmetrical.

C / WELD & PANEL PLAN

Seams away from peak strain

Large diameters may require more than one roll width. Plan panel joints and weld overlaps to keep critical tie-down zones clear wherever practical. Confirm waterproof seam details with the approved sample.

For hardware-specific construction examples, see the DERFLEX guide to tarp edge reinforcement. A standard 24-inch pitch may be a useful reference in retail listings, but it is not a universal safe spacing for every diameter or wind condition.

04 / Application-Based Selection

Where circular tarp covers are used.

The shape may be the same; the service conditions are not. Buyers should match the material and fixing method to the underlying asset.

ApplicationPriorityRecommended specification directionWhat to confirm
Industrial round machinery / tanksRain protection, abrasion and fasteningCustom waterproof PVC, localized wear pads, reinforced perimeter and planned drain slopeTop span, protrusions, height, anchor map and safe clearance from hot equipment
Baseball pitcher's moundQuick placement and field protectionFlexible waterproof cover with manageable weight and closely reviewed edge anchorsMound contour, turf protection, quick-removal process and wind procedure
Hay bale / round agricultural storageOutdoor UV, wind and condensation controlWeather-resistant circular top cover with adequate side drop and secure fasteningBale diameter, stack height, ventilation, drainage and storage duration

Circular stockpiles / open pitsWeather exposure, movement and accessReinforced cover, load-appropriate attachment and design for slope, runoff and removalTopography, height, drainage, wind, equipment access and project engineering requirements
Important safety distinction: A general-purpose round tarp is not a certified swimming-pool safety cover, fall-arrest device, structural roof or load-bearing protection system. Pool safety and any elevated/occupied installation require purpose-designed, appropriately verified systems.

For asset-specific weather protection and moisture concerns, compare DERFLEX's outdoor storage tarp selection guidance before choosing fabric weight.

Avoid Costly Rework

Five common round-tarp buying mistakes.

  • Ordering object size as tarp size. Add side allowance and agree finished diameter.
  • Specifying a universal grommet pitch. Use circumference and real anchor positions.
  • Assuming waterproof fabric means a waterproof installation. Check seams, runoff and fastening penetrations.
  • Choosing only by GSM. Include yarn structure, coating, tear performance and finished edge.
  • Ignoring wind uplift and standing water. Plan drainage, tension and secure attachments for the actual site.
Practical Answers

Round tarps: frequently asked questions.

Quick answers to the sizing, material and purchasing questions that matter most to circular-cover buyers.

What is the difference between a round tarp and a rectangular tarp?

A round tarp is cut to a circular perimeter and specified by diameter. Its edge reinforcement and eyelets are distributed around an arc, not along four straight edges. A rectangular tarp is usually easier to produce as a simple sheet, but may leave excess folds over circular equipment.

Can I order a custom-size round tarp?

DERFLEX supports made-to-specification tarp programs, including round and irregular covers. Provide the required finished diameter, application, edge design, quantity and drawing. Available fabrication and order terms are confirmed through quotation.

What material is best for a waterproof round tarp?

PVC-coated polyester is a useful heavy-duty option for reusable outdoor protection because it combines a reinforced textile base with a waterproof coating and weldable fabrication. PE may suit lighter temporary use; mesh is not suitable when water blocking is essential.

How do I calculate grommets for a circular tarp?

Calculate the perimeter as π times the finished diameter, then divide by the planned maximum arc spacing and round upward. For a 12 ft diameter and 2 ft maximum pitch, the geometric minimum is 19. Adjust the final count to the real anchors, wind loading and reinforced edge design.

Do round tarps have to be made from one fabric piece?

No. The finished diameter may be larger than the available roll width. Multiple PVC-coated panels can be joined using an appropriate seam process, provided the panel layout, weld quality and final dimensions are checked against the approved requirements.

Can a round tarp be used as a swimming-pool safety cover?

Not by default. A general round tarp can be discussed for debris or seasonal weather covering, but it is not automatically a certified safety cover. Drowning prevention, load-bearing safety and local pool rules require a purpose-designed and appropriately verified product.

Are finished tarp sizes the same as cut sizes?

Not necessarily. Hem folding, welding and edge construction affect the relationship between cutting dimensions and finished dimensions. State the required finished outside diameter and agree measurement tolerance on the fabrication drawing.

How are wholesale round tarps priced?

Price depends on diameter, material and GSM, fabric yield, panel joins, edge reinforcement, hardware count, printing, quantity, packing and shipping scope. DERFLEX can quote against a completed specification; there is no universal price based on diameter alone.
