Airbag Tarp Fabric for Industrial OEM Covers
Looking for airbag tarp fabric for a construction enclosure or industrial cover? Start by defining the fabric construction and the complete panel requirements. DERFLEX supplies PVC-coated polyester tarpaulin materials for industrial cover programs; the exact suitability of any proposed material must be evaluated against your application, drawings and required test evidence.

What does “airbag tarp” mean?
In the industrial tarp market, an airbag tarp often refers to a light, closely woven nylon sheet, sometimes coated with silicone, fabricated into panels for dust, paint overspray or construction enclosures. Suppliers offer different constructions and edge details; the name alone does not establish coating, permeability, fire performance or suitability for a particular project.
Airbag is also used for inflatable cargo dunnage bags and for safety devices. Those are different products with different operating demands. This page focuses on non-inflatable industrial sheets and covers. If your drawing calls for a specific coated nylon construction, provide that exact specification rather than relying on a generic trade name.
Choose a material by the job, not the name
| Requirement | What to compare | What to confirm |
|---|---|---|
| Lightweight panels for handling | Mass per area, panel size and folding behavior | Actual panel weight including seams and hardware |
| Weather or general equipment cover | Coating, UV exposure, abrasion and flexibility | Grade, exposure period and seam construction |
| Paint, dust or blasting enclosure | Fabric barrier, joint details, abrasion exposure | Site containment specification and complete system design |
| Repeat OEM fabrication | Usable width, coating adhesion, conversion and color | Approved sample, batch identification and agreed tolerances |
| Flame performance required | Required test method and finished use | Report for exact grade and project acceptance |

Coated nylon and PVC-coated polyester: what changes?
Coated nylon airbag tarp
Some market products use woven nylon with a silicone coating and sewn, reinforced edges. The coating, weight, internal seams and overlap configuration differ by supplier. Ask for the actual construction and the relevant test evidence, particularly if a project specifies a named product.
PVC-coated polyester
DERFLEX describes a woven polyester base with a PVC coating or laminated layer for industrial tarpaulin. A project-specific grade can be discussed for protective covers and fabrication. Relative weight, flexibility, environmental behavior and joining method need to be compared on real samples.
Joining and repairs
Coatings and reinforcement influence whether a panel is sewn, welded or joined by another qualified method. A compatible process for one material does not automatically transfer to another. Test the intended seam, edge and repair construction on the selected grade.
Substitution approval
Compare the written performance and installation requirements, not just fabric weight. Submit the proposed grade and test reports to the customer or project engineer; produce a representative panel and obtain approval before ordering.
Build an airbag tarp material specification
A useful inquiry links the finished cover to the conditions it will see. Provide the following details to reduce sample revisions and make quotations comparable.
Material and exposure
Define the substrate and coating if mandated, target mass and thickness, usable roll width, color and finish. Describe sunlight, rain, abrasion, temperature, expected handling cycles and any liquids or contaminants.
Panel and seam plan
Supply finished dimensions and tolerances, panel orientation, seam positions, overlap direction and whether the cover is supplied as rolls, cut pieces or finished panels. Mark openings, access points and interfaces on a drawing.
Edges and attachment
Specify webbing, corner patches, grommet type and spacing, loops or other fixing details. State whether seams need reinforcement and how loads are transferred to the supporting structure. Confirm fabrication and hardware in the offer.
Verification and delivery
List the applicable methods, minimum values, sampling plan and required reports. Include quantity, labels, packaging, destination and target delivery date. Agree approval samples and acceptance limits before production.
Design the panel around the installation
A roll of fabric is only one part of a working enclosure. Plan where seams fall relative to fixing lines and abrasion points. Reinforced edges distribute forces differently from individual eyelets; fastener spacing and support details should be designed for the intended installation. Avoid placing a critical seam at a sharp corner or a recurring wear point where the layout can be changed.
Specify panel overlaps with the direction of the joining detail clearly shown. A sewn or welded panel can still have gaps at overlaps, doors, roof interfaces, pipe penetrations and anchor points. Where containment is required, the contractor must integrate these details with the project’s ventilation, filtration, monitoring and applicable site requirements. Fabric permeability alone cannot establish the performance of the installed enclosure.
For related fabricated cover directions see PVC tarp options and PVC-coated tarp fabrication. Installation, rigging and site acceptance remain the responsibility of the project’s qualified parties.
Ask for a comparable data and sample package
Before approving the material
- Identify the manufacturer, grade, coating, base cloth and finish.
- Request a dated data sheet with methods, units, machine and cross directions, and whether results are typical or acceptance limits.
- Request applicable test reports traceable to the proposed construction, including the specified fire or weathering test where required.
- Review roll width, allowable defects, identification, packaging and color or finish tolerances.
Before accepting finished panels
- Approve a sample using the intended joining method and actual webbing or hardware.
- Check dimensions, seam layout, reinforcement, attachment locations and workmanship against the signed drawing.
- Agree inspection, sample size, acceptance criteria and handling of nonconforming material.
- Keep material, batch and panel records for future replacement orders.

Airbag tarp fabric FAQ
What is an airbag tarp?
In industrial containment, airbag tarp often describes a lightweight, tightly woven nylon tarp, sometimes silicone coated, used as an enclosure or protective panel. Construction and coating vary by supplier, so ask for the precise fabric and finished-panel specification.
Is an airbag tarp the same as a cargo dunnage airbag?
No. A containment tarp is a sheet or panel; a cargo dunnage airbag is an inflatable device placed in a cargo void. A tarp material specification alone does not establish suitability for a pressurized bag or a load-securing system.
Can PVC-coated polyester replace coated nylon?
It may be a candidate for some protective covers, but it is a different material system. Compare mass, handling, strength, seams, exposure and any project-specific requirements, then obtain written approval and test the actual proposed construction before substitution.
Does fabric alone determine containment performance?
No. Openings, penetrations, panel overlaps, seams, fastening and ventilation all influence the installed enclosure. The project designer and contractor must specify and verify the complete system for the intended work.
Can the fabric be made into custom panels?
DERFLEX discusses roll supply, cut panels and finished PVC tarps according to the order. Share drawings, dimensions, seam direction, edge details and quantity; confirm fabrication scope and tolerances in the written quotation.
What flame test documentation should I request?
Identify the project-required test method and acceptance criterion. Ask for a current report covering the exact fabric construction and relevant finish, then confirm whether the finished panel or installation requires additional evaluation.
Which data are useful for comparing materials?
Request construction, coating, mass, thickness, width, tensile and tear performance, coating adhesion and the test methods and conditions. Include seam performance, weathering or other properties where the job requires them; compare matching methods and directions.
Can this material be used for automotive safety airbags or lifting bags?
Do not assume so. Occupant restraint, lifting, flotation and other safety-critical inflatable devices require a separately qualified design, material and manufacturing process. This guide addresses industrial protective sheets and covers.
