PVC tarpaulin is a reinforced flexible sheet made by combining a textile base—most commonly high-strength polyester—with polyvinyl chloride (PVC) layers. Short answer

PVC tarpaulin is not a solid plastic sheet. It is usually a textile-reinforced composite: PVC on the outside, polyester scrim in the middle, and PVC on the opposite side. Manufacturers can change the base yarn, thread density, PVC formulation, coating weight, surface finish and processing route to create light-duty, heavy-duty, printable, flame-retardant, cold-flex or other application-specific grades.

Why GSM and thickness are not interchangeable:

GSM measures mass per unit area; thickness measures caliper. Two tarpaulins with similar GSM can use different textile-to-PVC ratios, yarn constructions or surface finishes. A thicker tarp is not automatically stronger, and a heavier tarp is not automatically better for manual handling. Compare construction and test data together.
