A commercial-grade cover should match the exposure, handling routine, seams and attachment loads. “Heavy duty” is a description; the purchase specification must define measurable requirements.

Solid PVC coated polyester is a practical direction for washable, fabricated rain covers. Lightweight PE can suit short-duration, cost-sensitive coverage. Mesh suits airflow or screening where a sealed rain barrier is unnecessary. Canvas constructions require a review of water resistance, drying and surface contact. Select the construction for the job rather than treating these materials as interchangeable.
The sheet, seams, reinforced perimeter and attachment hardware work together. A cover can fail at a local stress point while most of its fabric remains intact. Define the following details before comparing quotations.
Agree how webbing, hems and corner patches connect the attachment point to a wider area of fabric. Review pull direction and the actual support positions. Adding more grommets without reviewing reinforcement may leave the original weak area unchanged.
For a sealed cover, agree suitable welding and verify trial seams with the selected fabric. Sewing makes holes that may require a compatible sealing solution. Map seams away from severe rubbing or critical bend zones where the geometry allows.
Mark cargo corners, machine edges, support rails and other contact locations on the drawing. Specify compatible wear patches or protective interfaces. Keep hard fittings and trapped grit away from painted equipment surfaces.
Record measurements in the installed configuration, including drops, overlaps, openings and any liner thickness. State whether dimensions are finished or cut size. Review a sample fit before copying one design across a fleet or product range.
Use the support and cover geometry to direct rain away from sensitive areas. Keep attachment holes and openings in mind. A waterproof sheet does not create drainage by itself, and trapped moisture may need a separate ventilation plan.

Flat fabric mass in kg = width in m × length in m × GSM ÷ 1,000. This estimate helps compare cover sizes and material weights before a sample arrives. A finished tarp also includes seam overlaps, hems, patches and hardware.
The second sheet adds 6 kg before finishing. These are illustrative calculations, not DERFLEX product specifications. Discuss smaller panels, a planned rolling routine or suitable handling assistance when the finished cover becomes difficult to deploy.
For a shaped cover, use the total developed panel area. Do not use only the equipment footprint. This calculator estimates fabric mass; it is not a lifting or crew-size assessment.
Use the same service conditions and definition of a successful use for every quotation. Include acquisition, repairs, replacement handling and disposal. Track damage to protected assets separately so an inexpensive cover is not credited for deployments that failed to protect the goods.
Do not fill the denominator with an assumed lifespan. Trial covers, record failure locations and compare observations over a meaningful operating period. Bulk freight and packaging should be included in the purchase cost used in this calculation.
A useful acceptance plan identifies what will be measured, how many samples will be inspected and what happens if a batch falls outside the agreement. Request evidence for the quoted material and finished construction; a generic report may describe a different grade, color or specimen.

Flame retardancy, chemical compatibility and other special requirements need their own agreed scope and evidence. Do not infer these properties from PVC composition, fabric weight or a product photograph.
“Same as last time” without a drawing revision; quoting cut size instead of finished size; comparing fabric-only results with finished-cover results; and omitting delivery terms from a unit-price comparison.
Close these gaps before treating two quotes as equivalent. MOQ, sample charges and lead time should be confirmed for the selected supply format.
Discuss roll material or fabricated panels with the width, surface, welding process and downstream cover sizes defined. Roll width and planned seam locations affect material use and cutting yield. Include the expected monthly or annual requirement when asking for a quotation.
Discuss finished commercial covers with an approved size list, attachment design and packing plan. OEM programs can include agreed color, print, labels and packaging. Confirm which options are feasible together for the proposed material and order volume.

A commercial tarp should match the working conditions: exposure, repeated handling, contact with edges, tie-down layout and the cost of failure. Check the coated fabric, seams, reinforced perimeter and finished fit as a system. The label “heavy duty” alone does not define a universal strength, weight or service-life requirement.
Intact PVC coated polyester can provide a waterproof sheet, but finished-cover protection also depends on seam quality, openings, attachment holes, installation and drainage. Request checks on representative finished seams and hardware areas. A waterproof fabric result does not prove that every fabricated cover is leak-free.
First confirm that ounces mean ounces per square yard. Approximately 18 oz/yd² equals 610 gsm and 22 oz/yd² equals 746 gsm. Weight describes material mass, not a complete performance grade. Compare directional strength, tear behavior, flexibility, seam quality and the weight of the entire cover before choosing.

There is no reliable universal lifespan. Sunlight, climate, rubbing, installation tension, folding, cleaning and storage all influence replacement needs. Trial the proposed cover in the intended operation, record successful uses and damage locations, and use those observations to set inspection and replenishment intervals.
