Weave count describes how densely the reinforcing yarns are arranged inside a woven tarp. It is useful—but it is not a stand-alone grade. This guide shows what the numbers mean, how the four common counts compare, and what industrial buyers should verify before specifying a tarp.

What does tarp weave count mean?

A label such as 12×12 weave normally means that the reinforcing scrim has 12 yarns or strands running in one direction and 12 running at right angles within the specified measuring area—commonly one inch. The first number is associated with the warp direction and the second with the weft direction.

In a simple comparison using the same polymer, yarn type and manufacturing method, a higher count creates a tighter reinforcing grid. That can improve resistance to local tearing, puncture propagation and distortion. However, it does not automatically make one tarp stronger than every tarp with a lower count.

Buyer takeaway: use weave count as one line in the specification—not as the entire specification. Compare it together with yarn denier, finished weight, mil thickness, coating method, UV package, tensile strength, tear strength and edge reinforcement.

How an 8×8 or 14×14 weave is counted

The two numbers describe yarn density in perpendicular directions. They do not describe the tarp's thickness, yarn size or finished weight.

Important: compare like with like

A 14×14 lightweight tape-yarn PE tarp and a lower-count fabric made with much heavier high-tenacity yarn are not directly comparable. The material system, yarn mass and tested mechanical properties can outweigh the count number.

Why a higher weave count does not tell the whole story

Two tarps can carry the same 12×12 label and perform very differently. These additional variables determine whether the finished cover is appropriate for the job.

Yarn denier

Denier describes yarn linear mass. A thicker or heavier yarn can carry more load even when the weave count is unchanged. The denier should be stated for warp and weft.

Finished GSM or oz/yd²

Finished weight reflects the combined base fabric and coating or laminate. It helps reveal whether a “heavy-duty” label is supported by meaningful material mass.

Mil thickness

Mil is one-thousandth of an inch. Thickness affects handling, puncture resistance and coating coverage, but thick film on weak scrim is not automatically a strong tarp.
