For repeated outdoor, transport, construction and industrial use, a good heavy-duty all-weather tarp is usually a PVC-coated polyester tarp specified as a complete system: waterproof coated fabric, UV-resistant formulation, strong polyester reinforcement, welded or properly sealed seams, reinforced edges and attachment points matched to wind and handling loads.
The center of a tarp is rarely the only place that matters. Water can enter at seams, wind can fatigue hems and corners, UV can age the coating, cold can reduce flexibility, and abrasion can wear through local contact points. That is why experienced buyers inspect fabric, fabrication and installation together.

Waterproof surface + UV stability + reinforced textile core + durable seams + reinforced edges + correct anchoring.
If one of those is weak, adding more thickness may not solve the real failure mode.
“All-weather” is useful buyer language, but it is not a universal engineering rating. Define the hazards the tarp will actually face, then match the material and finished construction to them.

Contact with rails, cargo corners, frames and rough ground creates local wear. Add wear patches or protective interfaces where stress is concentrated.

No material is ideal for every job. The key trade-offs are service duration, waterproofing, breathability, weight, abrasion, fabrication method and cost.
Waterproof coated surface, strong textile reinforcement, heat-weldable seams and extensive reinforcement options. Often the practical choice for reusable industrial all-weather covers.
Lightweight and economical. Useful for temporary or cost-sensitive coverage, but long-term abrasion and repeated high-stress handling depend strongly on grade.

Reduces wind pressure and allows airflow. Appropriate for debris, shade and containment, but not for full rain protection because the structure is intentionally open.

A useful RFQ should describe the material system and the finished cover. Where a value varies by project, the safer approach is to confirm it against the intended service condition rather than invent a universal number.

Unsupported low points can collect water and overload the cover. Provide slope, drainage and adequate support instead of assuming fabric strength alone will solve the problem.
Repeated wind movement fatigues hems and hardware. Improve fit, anchor spacing and load distribution rather than only increasing GSM.
A metal grommet is only as strong as the material around it. Reinforced hems, webbing and corner patches help spread the load.
Rails, cargo corners and frames can grind through coatings. Local wear patches or padding can outperform adding extra weight to the whole tarp.
A formulation unsuitable for the target low temperature may become difficult to fold or handle. Include climate in the RFQ before sampling.
Waterproof base fabric does not guarantee a waterproof finished cover. Joint method, welding parameters, overlaps and penetrations must be reviewed.
A supplier can match the material more accurately when the inquiry describes the failure risks and finished product—not only “heavy duty, waterproof, blue.”

For many reusable industrial and outdoor applications, a good heavy-duty all-weather tarp is PVC-coated polyester with a waterproof surface, UV-resistant formulation, reinforced base fabric, welded or properly sealed seams, reinforced edges and attachment hardware matched to the real wind and handling loads. The correct weight and construction depend on the application.
For demanding repeated use, vinyl / PVC-coated polyester is often selected because it combines waterproofing, stronger reinforcement, weldability and custom finishing. PE poly tarps remain useful when low weight, temporary coverage or cost is the priority.
There is no universal thickness. Thickness should be considered together with GSM, polyester scrim, coating quality, tear strength, UV exposure, seam design and edge reinforcement. A thicker tarp with weak seams or poorly reinforced grommets can still fail early.
The coated fabric can provide a waterproof barrier, but the finished cover also depends on seams, overlaps, holes, hardware and installation. For heavy rain, discuss welded seam construction and make sure the cover sheds water instead of allowing it to pool.
Wind performance depends heavily on fit, reinforced perimeter design, anchor spacing, webbing, corner reinforcement, grommets or D-rings and the support system. Avoid loose material that can flap continuously, and do not treat fabric weight alone as a wind-load rating.
A suitable PVC tarp can be formulated for cold flexibility, but snow load is a structural issue involving the frame, support spacing, slope and maintenance. Use the tarp as a weather barrier, not as an unsupported snow-bearing structure.
