Selection logic
A construction ground cover works below the activity, so its failure modes differ from an overhead cover. Water can become trapped. Sharp aggregate can concentrate load. Pallets can press on welds. Repeated walking can move an unsecured sheet. The useful specification is the one that addresses those conditions before production.

Construction applications
“Ground protection” can describe very different work. The six profiles below help separate a reusable floor from a temporary separation sheet, a surface protector or a liquid-control product.
Moisture & contamination separation
Create a cleaner separation layer beneath wrapped lumber, pallets, pipes or packaged components. Keep products elevated where drainage or prolonged water exposure is possible.
Reusable work-zone flooring
Define a washable zone for light fabrication, sorting or assembly. Specify foot traffic, cleaning method and whether an additional cushioning layer is needed.
Surface-specific system
Protect slabs, paving or selected interior surfaces during later project stages. Surface compatibility and trapped grit must be reviewed before installation.
Maintenance ground barrier
Place a durable barrier beneath stationary tools or maintenance activity. Where spill retention is required, use a purpose-designed containment product rather than a flat general tarp.
Temporary site separation
Separate clean materials from soil, collect manageable debris or establish a short-duration work pad. A tarp is not a substitute for engineered geotextile or ground stabilization.
Fast deployment planning
Stage ground covers for rapid protection of incoming materials and temporary clean zones after rain. Match packed size and handling weight to the crew that will deploy them.
Fabrication strategy
A thicker sheet can still fail early if the seam, fixing or ground-preparation plan is wrong. Treat the finished tarp as an assembly with predictable load paths.
A ground cover tarp is a protective barrier. It is not structural decking, fall protection, certified pedestrian flooring, geotechnical reinforcement or automatic spill containment.
Large ground cover tarps are commonly fabricated from multiple widths. Put the panel plan on the approved drawing and avoid locating critical welds beneath pallet feet or recurring travel paths where practical.
A folded hem, inserted webbing, rope reinforcement or layered edge can be discussed according to how the sheet will be handled. Reinforced corners may be added where pulling concentrates force.
Grommets, loops and D-rings help position a tarp but also introduce local stress and openings. Their spacing, backing patches and intended tie direction should be defined rather than copied from a retail sheet.
Heavier fabric alone does not eliminate puncture risk. Remove protrusions and consider a sacrificial underlay, mat or geotextile when gravel, rebar ends or angular debris cannot be fully controlled.
Ground cover tarps should not be installed as unintended basins. Grade, overlap direction, edge position and inspection frequency affect whether water drains or becomes trapped beneath materials.

Buyer questions
These answers support initial selection. Suitability is confirmed against the actual site, finished design, sample and agreed test criteria.
It is installed directly on a site surface to separate materials, temporary work zones or equipment from moisture, mud, dust and rough ground. Common uses include laydown areas, reusable work floors, finished-surface protection and short-duration material staging. The tarp does not replace engineered ground stabilization, fall protection or structural flooring.
PVC-coated polyester is often considered for reusable ground covers that need welded panels, stronger handling, easier cleaning and custom finishing. Woven PE or PP structures can suit lighter, short-duration and price-sensitive programs. Surface roughness, point loads, traffic, weather and the reuse cycle should determine the final structure.
There is no single construction-site GSM. DERFLEX generally discusses reinforced PVC-coated groundsheet directions within an approximate 300–900 gsm range, while lighter woven-poly structures may be lower. GSM is only one input; yarn, weave, coating, seam layout, edge design, underlay and installation also affect service performance.
Custom projects can include finished dimensions, panel and weld layout, edge reinforcement, corner patches, grommets or loops, color, surface direction, printing, labels, carry or storage bags and export packing. Options are confirmed according to the material, drawing, quantity and sample result.
A general flat ground tarp should not be described as drive-over capable without a validated product design. Wheel loads, turning, braking, ground texture and trapped debris can create high shear and puncture forces. Send vehicle type, axle load, movement pattern and surface details for engineering review; a protected mat or different system may be required.
Provide the ground type, activity above the sheet, finished size or drawing, expected traffic, outdoor exposure, deployment frequency, cleaning method, quantity, destination market, color, fixing layout, test requirements, branding and packing. Photos of the site and a simple marked sketch usually make the first material discussion more useful.
