Material comes before GSM. A 650gsm PVC coated fabric and a lightweight PE sheet belong to different engineering and cost categories, so a useful comparison starts with the protection task.

GSM measures mass per square metre. Mil and millimetres measure physical thickness. Two tarpaulins can have the same GSM yet use different reinforcement, coating share and surface treatment, so their field performance can differ.

Conversions: 1 oz/yd2 ≈ 33.9057 GSM. 1 mil = 0.0254 mm. There is no universal GSM-to-mil conversion because material density and construction vary.
