How to Read a PVC Tarpaulin Technical Data Sheet

Read the sheet as a linked material system—not as a list of isolated numbers.

Start with the exact model and document version. “PVC tarpaulin” is a material family, not one specification. The sheet should identify whether the material is knife coated, hot laminated, cold laminated or built by another agreed route.

Buyer check: A heavier material may contain more PVC without using a stronger base cloth. Compare GSM with denier, density, tensile and tear data.

Thickness: mm or mil

Thickness describes the finished material body at the measured point. It affects handling, puncture behavior, welding setup and packaging volume, yet it is sensitive to embossing, pressure and the measurement method.

  • Nominal and tolerated thickness
  • Measurement method and pressure foot if specified
  • Whether an embossed surface changes the reading
  • Uniformity across the width and between batches
Buyer check: Do not treat mil, GSM and denier as interchangeable. They describe different parts of the construction.

Base Fabric: Denier and Weave Density

A notation such as 1000D × 1000D describes yarn linear mass in two directions. A construction such as 20 × 20 usually describes thread density in warp and weft per stated area or inch. The supplier should define its notation.

  • Threads per inch, yarns per centimeter or another declared density unit
  • Plain, Panama/basket, ripstop, knitted or other construction
  • High-tenacity or standard polyester where relevant
Buyer check: Two materials labeled 1000D can perform differently when their density, yarn grade, weave and coating system differ.

Tensile or Breaking Strength

Tensile testing measures the force required to break a defined specimen under a stated method. Values are usually reported separately in the machine/warp and cross/weft directions, often in N/5 cm or another unit defined by the method.

  • Minimum requirement versus typical result
  • Initial test versus aged, wet or conditioned result
Buyer check: Tensile strength is important for broad loading and tension. It does not replace tear testing around cuts, eyelets or damaged edges.

Tear Strength

Tear resistance estimates how the material resists propagation once a cut or tear has started. The result depends strongly on the test method, specimen shape and yarn movement, so numbers from different methods should not be compared directly.

  • Whether the result is initial or after ageing
  • Relevance to grommets, edges, corners and cargo contact points
Buyer check: A truck tarp that experiences flapping and sharp load points may need stronger tear control and reinforcement even when its tensile result is high.

Coating Adhesion or Peel Strength

Adhesion measures how strongly the PVC layer is bonded to the textile reinforcement under the stated peel method. It matters for repeated folding, welding, abrasion, cold conditions, water contact and long-term resistance to delamination.

  • Unit, commonly N/5 cm or as specified
  • Initial versus aged adhesion
  • Difference between coating bond and welded-seam strength
Buyer check: Ask for a welding trial on the actual finish. Strong base adhesion does not automatically define the correct hot-air or high-frequency welding window.

Waterproof or Hydrostatic Data

A hydrostatic-head value applies to a fabric specimen under a named test. It does not automatically certify the finished cover, because seams, stitching, welds, grommets, punctures, abrasion and ponding can create leakage paths.

  • Test method and acceptance pressure
  • Initial or aged specimen condition
  • Coating pinhole and continuity requirements
  • Finished seam or assembly test if the application is critical
Buyer check: Specify the waterproof system: fabric, seam method, reinforcement, drainage and intended pressure—not only a marketing label.

Temperature, UV and Ageing

Temperature lines are meaningful only when the supplier explains the performance being evaluated—cold cracking, flexibility, short exposure, continuous use or another criterion. UV claims should identify the test route or project expectation where required.

  • Cold-flex or cold-crack criterion
  • Operating and storage conditions
  • Accele, rated weathering method and exposure time if specified
  • Retention of tensile, tear, color or coating performance after ageing
Buyer check: “UV resistant” without a formulation grade, test method or expected exposure condition is not enough for a demanding outdoor project.

FR, Compliance, Finish and Processing

Flame-retardant and chemical-compliance statements must identify the requested standard, product grade, color or construction and supporting document. Surface finish also affects cleaning, printing, friction and weldability.

  • Named FR standard and certificate/test-report scope
  • REACH, RoHS or destination-market documentation when requested
  • Matte, gloss, lacquered, embossed, anti-mildew or anti-static finish

Important: Values from two suppliers are comparable only when the material state, specimen direction, units, test method, conditioning and acceptance status are aligned. A higher number tested by a different method may not represent better performance.
Directional data

MD, CD, Warp, Weft—and Why the Test Method Matters

A coated textile is directional. The two reported values often differ because yarn count, tension, weave geometry and production direction are not identical. The labels should be defined on the sheet rather than assumed.

Read both directions before approving the material.

MD often refers to machine direction and generally aligns with warp or roll length. CD often refers to cross direction and generally aligns with weft or roll width. Suppliers may also use L/W or other notation, so request a legend.

Tensile / Breaking Strength

ISO 1421 / DIN 53354

Commonly referenced for coated-fabric tensile testing. Confirm specimen width, jaw method, direction and whether the result is a minimum or average.

Tear Strength

Used for defined tear procedures. Results can vary materially by method and specimen geometry, so the method must travel with the number.

Coating Adhesion

DIN 53357

Commonly referenced for peel strength between coating and reinforcing fabric. Confirm direction, specimen preparation and ageing condition.

Hydrostatic Resistance

ISO 811

Measures resistance to water penetration under increasing hydrostatic pressure. Finished seams and fittings may need separate validation.

US Strip Tensile Reference

ASTM D5035

May appear in North American textile specifications. Do not merge ASTM and ISO figures into one comparison without confirming method equivalence.

Comparison rule: Never rank suppliers using tensile, tear or adhesion numbers that were produced under different methods, units or specimen conditions. Ask each supplier to quote against one common test basis or provide a cross-tested sample program.

Is higher GSM always better for PVC tarpaulin?

No. Higher GSM means more finished mass per area, but strength also depends on the polyester yarn, weave density, PVC distribution, coating adhesion and manufacturing route. Select the construction from the application, handling cycle, abrasion and required test values.

What is the difference between tensile strength and tear strength?
