60 Mil TPO
Roofing Membrane

A 60 mil TPO membrane specifies a thermoplastic polyolefin roofing sheet approximately 1.52 mm thick. For contractors, distributors and project buyers, the next decision is how that thickness is defined, documented and supplied.

Compare 45, 60 and 80 mil options, set acceptance criteria and prepare a commercial roofing RFQ. DERFLEX publishes TPO supply directions covering multiple thicknesses, roll formats and colors; request review of your exact 60 mil requirement before ordering.

Exact 60 mil grade, tolerance, roll dimensions and supporting documents are subject to DERFLEX confirmation.

What does 60 mil TPO mean?

60 mil means 60 thousandths of an inch: 0.060 inch, or exactly 1.524 mm. In a reinforced TPO roofing sheet, overall membrane thickness and polymer thickness above the scrim are separate measurements.

A sheet described only as “1.5 mm TPO” is not an exact mathematical match: 1.5 mm converts to about 59.06 mil. Whether an offered metric grade satisfies a 60 mil tender depends on the contract's unit system, thickness definition, tolerance and approved documentation.

For the wider product family, use DERFLEX's TPO specification reference. This page focuses on buying and accepting the 60 mil thickness class.

Option A · Nominal 60 mil

“Reinforced TPO roof membrane, nominal 0.060 in. State the permitted tolerance, measurement procedure and sampling plan in the approved submittal.”

A nominal designation identifies a target class. Establish its acceptance range using the applicable specification and contract.

Option B · Minimum 60 mil

“Reinforced TPO roof membrane, minimum thickness 0.060 in, verified using the contract's agreed method and sampling plan. Report thickness over scrim separately.”

Minimum wording changes the acceptance obligation. Confirm the supplier can offer and document this requirement before purchase.

Contract example: if a tender requires minimum 0.060 in, a “nominal 1.5 mm” label does not establish acceptance. Request the measurement report and a written response to the exact clause. These clauses are drafting prompts, not DERFLEX test results.

Compare the whole decision

45 vs 60 vs 80 mil TPO:
where does 60 mil fit?

60 mil is a middle thickness class between 45 and 80 mil. Evaluate it for commercial roofs when the approved assembly, exposure, service access and purchasing budget support it. Thickness alone does not establish roof life, hail resistance or warranty eligibility.

Thickness class comparison — selection prompts, not DERFLEX performance claims
ThicknessExact conversionWhen to evaluateDecision to resolve
45 mil1.143 mmProjects explicitly permitting a thinner membrane classDoes the specified system and durability evidence suit the service conditions?
60 mil1.524 mmCommercial tenders seeking the middle sheet classAre thickness definition, protective layer and assembly documents aligned?
80 mil2.032 mmProjects requiring a thicker sheet or an additional durability reviewDo exact-grade puncture/weathering data and system terms justify the change?

60 mil is 33.3% thicker than 45 mil; 80 mil is 33.3% thicker than 60 mil. These are thickness ratios, not predicted increases in lifespan or strength.

Frequent equipment access?

Review cover-board support, designated walkways and protection around service areas. A thicker sheet does not replace traffic planning.

Comparing supplier prices?

Align thickness definition, construction, roll area, documentation and freight basis first. A lower price for a different grade is not a comparable bid.

Inside the sheet

Total thickness is one
part of the build.

A common reinforced TPO roof field sheet places polyester scrim between upper and lower TPO plies. The exposed top ply, reinforcement and lower ply each contribute to the construction.

Two sheets with the same nominal total thickness can have different polymer thickness above the reinforcement. Ask for that measurement, its method and the grade identification when it is part of your purchasing requirement.

Read the reinforced-sheet construction guide when confirming a field membrane rather than a nonreinforced flashing sheet.

Match the roofing system

Applications and
attachment decisions

A 60 mil sheet is one roof component. Start with the building conditions and approval requirements, then specify the construction and accessory package.

Application → buying question → specification action
Buying situationQuestion to answerAction before quotation
Warehouse / logistics roofCan roll layout and attachment suit the open roof field?Supply roof dimensions, deck details and layout requirements.
Factory with roof equipmentWhere will workers, tools and equipment contact the roof?Identify service routes, protection, penetrations and test evidence.
Replacement / recover roofIs the existing build-up dry, sound and compatible?Provide the survey and proposed substrate before selecting a backing.
Distributor / private labelHow will repeat deliveries preserve the approved grade?Freeze thickness wording, sample ID, roll size, label and substitution rules.

Mechanically attached or adhered?

Use the approved assembly's fastening or adhesive arrangement. For a backed adhered construction, review fleece-backed TPO options; confirm which thickness the designation measures.

Considering factory-applied adhesive?

Self-adhered TPO changes the attachment workflow. Confirm substrate, primer, application conditions and liner handling; seams still require the specified joining procedure.

How to accept a 60 mil TPO order

Agree on the inspection plan before production. These checkpoints make the purchase reviewable without assuming unpublished DERFLEX tolerances or test results.

  1. Identify the exact sample

Record grade, construction, color, backing and sample reference. Retain the approved data-sheet revision with the purchase order.

  2. Separate nominal and minimum

Approve the clause, governing units, method, conditioning and sampling positions. Record overall thickness and thickness over scrim where required.

  3. Review durability evidence

Match reports to the offered product and required edition. Another manufacturer's performance table cannot qualify the DERFLEX order.

  4. Confirm field welding procedure

Agree on trial welds, equipment setup, seam checks and repair criteria. Use the selected product's instructions and site conditions to establish settings.

  5. Check quantity and packing

Reconcile roll width, length, count, labels, condition and packing list. Confirm actual shipment weights for lifting and freight planning.

  6. Control later substitutions

Require written approval for changes to grade, thickness definition, reinforcement, backing or roll format before repeat production.

Material evidence

ASTM D6878/D6878M addresses reinforced TPO roofing sheet. Specify the contract edition and review the offered grade against it.

Read the ASTM buying guide →

Assembly evidence

Fire classification and wind-uplift approval require the relevant complete roof assembly documents. A sheet-level statement does not establish either.

Roll evidence

Gross roll area is width × length. Usable coverage also depends on laps and layout; net weight needs confirmed unit mass.

Questions before purchase

60 mil TPO
membrane FAQ

Clear answers for thickness selection, roof-system review and commercial sourcing.

How thick is 60 mil TPO in millimeters?

60 mil is 0.060 inch, exactly 1.524 mm. The commonly rounded description is 1.52 mm. Use the contract's governing units and thickness definition when evaluating a supplied membrane.

Is 1.5 mm TPO the same as 60 mil?

They are close, but not exact equivalents. 1.5 mm is approximately 59.06 mil. Acceptance depends on the specified nominal or minimum thickness, tolerance, test method and approved submittal; do not approve a substitution from the label alone.

What is the difference between nominal and minimum 60 mil?

Nominal 60 mil describes a target thickness class with the specified acceptance tolerance. Minimum 60 mil sets a lower thickness requirement under the agreed measurement and sampling procedure. Write the required definition into the purchase order.

Should I buy 60 mil or 80 mil TPO?

Compare the approved assembly, exact-grade durability data, traffic protection, handling and commercial terms. 80 mil is a thicker sheet class; it does not automatically deliver a proportional increase in strength, lifespan or warranty coverage.

How long does a 60 mil TPO roof last?

Thickness alone cannot establish a service life. Formulation, installation, weather exposure, drainage, roof details and maintenance affect performance. Review documented product history and the actual warranty terms for the complete selected system.

Is white 60 mil TPO a cool-roof product?

A white TPO surface can reflect solar radiation, but compliance depends on the exact product's documented reflectance, emittance or SRI and the applicable criteria. Color and thickness alone do not establish a rating or energy-saving amount.

Can a 60 mil TPO membrane be hot-air welded?

TPO roof field laps are typically hot-air welded. Use the selected membrane's instructions, compatible accessories and trial welds to establish site settings, then inspect and repair seams under the project's quality procedure.

Can DERFLEX quote a bulk or OEM 60 mil TPO order?

Submit your exact thickness clause, construction, roll size, color, quantity, destination and required documents for review. Published TPO supply directions do not by themselves confirm an exact 60 mil SKU; availability, MOQ, samples, labeling and lead time must be agreed in the quotation.

Make “60 mil” a clear purchase requirement.

Send the thickness clause, construction, roll format, quantity and project documents.
