Why Two Tarps with the Same Mil Can Perform Differently
Mil is one dimensional measurement. Real tarp durability depends on how the material is built and how the finished cover transfers load.
PE Woven Tarps
Lightweight woven polyethylene tarps often use mil as a familiar retail specification. Compare weave density, lamination, UV treatment, corner reinforcement and grommet construction before relying on the label.
PVC / Vinyl Tarps
PVC coated polyester is commonly selected for reusable industrial covers because the woven base fabric, coating and weldable surface form a reinforced system. Buyers should compare mil or mm with GSM/oz, denier, coating adhesion and fabrication details.
Clear Vinyl & Specialty Sheet
A 20, 30 or 40 mil clear or specialty flexible sheet may be physically thick but may not contain the woven reinforcement used in an industrial tarpaulin. Compare material type before using the same duty labels.
Match the Failure Mode, Not Just the Mil Number
A tarp usually fails at a real stress point. Adding thickness can help some problems, but it does not fix every failure mechanism.
Edge & Anchor Stress
Flutter and uplift concentrate loads at hems, grommets and corners. Reinforcement and correct spacing can matter as much as the sheet thickness.
Contact-Point Wear
Cargo edges, machine corners and roof surfaces can rub through a tarp. Add pads, smoother load paths or stronger coated construction where contact occurs.
Material Aging
Sunlight can reduce flexibility and strength over time. UV resistance is controlled by material formulation and exposure, not by thickness alone.
Seams & Pooling
Waterproof material can still perform poorly when seams leak or water pools. Use suitable seam construction, slope and installation practices.
What to Specify When a Mil Number Is Not Enough

- Physical thickness: target mil or mm, plus the measurement method/tolerance if thickness is critical.

- Base reinforcement: denier, yarn density, scrim or approved reference construction.
- Environment: UV, rain, cold, heat, chemicals, abrasion, wind and handling frequency.
- Finished tarp design: cut/finished size, seams, hems, webbing, rope edges, corner patches, grommets or D-rings.

Five Thickness Mistakes That Create Bad Tarp Specifications

Assuming higher mil always means stronger
Thickness does not reveal the yarn, weave, coating adhesion, seams, reinforcement or hardware.
Comparing PE and PVC by mil alone
Different material systems can have very different mass, reinforcement and fabrication behavior at the same physical thickness.
Trying to convert GSM directly to mil
GSM is mass per area; mil is thickness. There is no universal conversion because material density and construction vary.
Ignoring finished size and tie-down loads
Large covers can place much higher forces on edges and attachment points, even when the sheet material is thick.
Buying a “heavy duty” label instead of a specification
