Tarp Tolerance Guide: GSM, Thickness, Width and Finished-Size Variations

A practical tolerance is more than a plus-or-minus symbol. It tells the buyer what is nominal, how the tarp will be measured, where samples will be taken and what range will be accepted for a roll, lot or finished cover.

This guide helps tarp converters, importers, distributors, fleet suppliers and industrial procurement teams prepare clearer specifications for PVC-coated polyester rolls and custom finished tarps. It explains why two measurements from the same material may differ, how cut size differs from finished size and how to prevent a reasonable manufacturing variation from becoming a receiving dispute.

GSM Mass per unit area. Define the specimen, conditioning, test method and whether the limit applies to individual readings or the lot average.
Thickness A pressure-dependent measurement. State the instrument method, test points and treatment of embossed or textured surfaces.
Roll Width Separate nominal, total and usable width. Edge waviness, selvedge and coating quality can affect converting yield.

The short answer

There is no useful tarp tolerance without an agreed measurement rule.

Buyer decision

Do not approve a specification that lists only “650 GSM,” “0.50 mm,” “2.50 m wide” or “6 × 8 m.” Each value should identify whether it is nominal, minimum, maximum or target; the allowed variation; the test or measurement method; and the acceptance unit—one specimen, one roll, a lot average or every finished tarp.

Commercial tarp tolerances vary with material construction, coating route, roll width, finish, product size, fabrication method and the precision required by the application. Stock covers, fitted machinery covers, truck curtains and tensioned panels should not automatically use the same limits. The correct tolerance is the one written into the approved specification and confirmed as feasible before bulk production.

Vocabulary before numbers

Nominal value, actual reading and acceptance limit are different things.

A nominal value is the name or target used to describe a product. An actual reading is the result obtained from a defined specimen at a defined time. A tolerance is the permitted deviation from the stated basis. The acceptance rule explains how multiple readings are converted into a pass, hold or reject decision.

This distinction matters because flexible coated textiles are not machined metal parts. Polyester yarn, weaving, coating distribution, surface embossing, winding tension, temperature, humidity and finishing can all influence measurement. Variation does not remove the need for control; it makes a clear control method more important.

A buyer should also distinguish a typical production value from a contractual requirement. A typical figure describes what is commonly observed. A minimum or maximum creates a limit. A target with a tolerance creates a range. These statements are not interchangeable.

How to specify the main tarp variations

GSM, thickness, width and finished size describe different aspects of a tarp. One cannot be used as a reliable substitute for another, and each needs its own measurement and acceptance language.

GSM tolerance: control mass, not assumed strength

GSM means grams per square metre of the finished material. For PVC tarpaulin, total GSM normally includes the polyester substrate, PVC layers and applicable surface treatment. It is useful for material yield, handling mass, freight planning and broad duty-level comparison.

GSM does not independently reveal yarn denier, weave density, tensile strength, tear resistance or coating adhesion. Two 650 GSM materials can distribute mass differently between the textile base and PVC system.

  • State total finished mass per unit area and the agreed test method.
  • Define specimen size, conditioning and whether lacquer or another finish is included.
  • Specify the number and location of samples across and along the roll.
  • Say whether the limit applies to every specimen, a roll mean or a lot mean.
  • Keep GSM acceptance separate from tensile, tear and adhesion requirements.

Thickness tolerance: define pressure and surface

Thickness is the distance between the two outer surfaces under a specified measuring pressure. On a flexible or embossed coated fabric, the reading can change with the presser foot, force, dwell time, surface texture and exact test point.

ISO 2286-3 is a relevant reference for measuring the thickness of rubber- or plastics-coated fabrics at a specified pressure. A contract may use this or another agreed method, but the method must travel with the number.

  • Write the nominal millimetres or mils and the allowed deviation.
  • Identify the method and instrument pressure where required.
  • Exclude folds, welds, hems, reinforcement and obvious defects from flat-fabric readings.
  • Define how embossed peaks and valleys are handled.
  • Use several cross-width positions to review coating uniformity.

Width tolerance: buy usable converting width

Roll width seems simple until a converter discovers that the quoted figure includes an edge that cannot be welded, printed or cut into the planned panel. The purchase specification should distinguish nominal width, total measured width and usable width after any excluded edge zones.

ISO 2286-1 provides methods for determining length, width and net mass of a roll of rubber- or plastics-coated fabric. For converting control, the buyer may also need an application-specific usable-width definition.

  • State the target width and whether negative variation is allowed.
  • Define total width versus usable, coated or printable width.
  • Identify any excluded selvedge, edge curl or damaged edge allowance.
  • Measure without artificial stretching and under agreed roll conditions.
  • Connect width acceptance to the cutting plan and seam layout.

Finished-size tolerance: measure the product the user receives

Cut size is the panel dimension before edge folds, seams, weld overlaps and some finishing operations. Finished size is the final usable dimension after the tarp is fabricated. Many stock tarps are sold by cut size and therefore measure smaller after hemming. Custom fitted covers should normally be quoted from an agreed finished-size drawing.

Finished dimensions may also be affected by material relaxation, welding heat, sewing, reinforced edges, pockets, elastic sections and the tension applied during measurement. The supplier and buyer should agree whether the tarp is measured flat, relaxed, tensioned or fitted to a reference frame.

  • Mark every drawing dimension as cut, finished or reference.
  • Define flat/relaxed measurement and the measurement direction.
  • Show seam locations, hem depth, overlap, pockets and hardware centres.
  • Use tighter project limits only after production feasibility is reviewed.
  • Separate overall size tolerance from grommet or D-ring position tolerance.
Write the range correctly

Percentage, fixed-unit and one-sided tolerances serve different purposes.

A tolerance can be symmetrical, such as a target plus or minus a defined amount. It can be asymmetric, allowing more variation on one side than the other. It can also be one-sided when falling below the target creates a converting problem but a small positive allowance remains usable.

Receiving inspection

A tolerance range is only as dependable as the sampling plan.

One convenient reading from the centre of one roll cannot describe a shipment. A practical plan spreads samples across rolls, across the width and along the roll length. It also protects the material from contamination and records the instrument, date, operator and sample identity.

Identify

Match the shipment, roll number, product code, color, batch and approved specification revision.

Condition

Let specimens relax or condition as required by the agreed method before weighing or measuring.

Distribute

Take planned readings from representative rolls and positions rather than selecting only easy points.

Record

Keep individual results, averages, units, equipment and any excluded edge or defect observations.

Decide

Apply the written acceptance rule. Do not invent a new averaging method after results are known.

Cut size versus finished size

Hems and seams consume material; they are not measurement errors.

Why the final cover may be smaller

A raw panel loses usable dimension when an edge is folded into a hem. A multi-panel tarp also uses width in each welded or sewn overlap. Reinforcement, rope edges and pockets may require additional folds. The amount depends on the fabrication design.

Finished dimension = planned cut dimension − consumed hems/overlaps ± process variation

If a listing or purchase order says only “10 × 20 ft,” the buyer and supplier may be thinking about different stages. State “finished size after all hems and seams” when the installation must fit a frame, vehicle, machine or opening.

Example: plan from the required finished dimension

Assume a buyer requires a rectangular finished cover. The fabricator should work backward from the final drawing, adding the material needed for perimeter hems, longitudinal seams, pockets and fabrication allowance. The cutting plan will also depend on available roll width.

  1. Fix the datum: define the exact corners or edges from which length and width will be checked.
  2. Confirm the condition: measure flat and relaxed unless another condition is written.
  3. Design the panel layout: choose roll orientation and seam positions before calculating raw cuts.
  4. Add consumed material: include seam overlap, hem depth, pockets and reinforced zones.
  5. Apply the finished-size tolerance: inspect the completed tarp against the drawing, not against the unworked cut panel.

This sequence helps prevent a buyer from paying for an “exact size” while receiving a product that was actually specified by pre-hem cut size.

Control the process stage that creates the measurement.

Tolerance management is not a final-inspection activity alone. It begins with raw polyester construction, continues through PVC coating or lamination and ends after conversion into a finished tarp.

Yarn linear density, weave density, warp/weft tension and fabric uniformity influence substrate mass, dimensional behavior and the way PVC is carried across the width.

Six mistakes that turn normal variation into commercial risk

Comparing targets with minimums

A “650 GSM typical” value from one supplier cannot be fairly ranked against a “650 GSM minimum” from another. Align the status of every figure before comparing price.

Using one specimen as the lot

A single centre sample can hide cross-width or roll-to-roll variation. The sampling plan should represent the shipment and be agreed before testing.

Assuming thickness predicts GSM

Thickness depends on structure, surface and measurement pressure. GSM measures mass per area. Both should be controlled separately when both matter.

Buying total width instead of usable width

A nominal roll can meet total width yet reduce panel yield if its edge zone is unsuitable for welding, printing or cutting. Define the usable basis.

Writing size without fabrication stage

“6 × 8 m” is incomplete when one side means cut size and the other expects finished size. Put the measurement stage on the drawing and quotation.

Requesting tight limits without a method

A narrow range does not create precision if different people use different tools, pressures, datums or material conditions. Define reproducibility first.

What is a normal GSM tolerance for PVC tarpaulin?

There is no single percentage or fixed GSM range that is correct for every PVC tarpaulin. The feasible tolerance depends on nominal weight, substrate, coating or lamination route, finish, production width, sample plan and commercial agreement. Ask the supplier to state the range, method and whether it applies to individual readings, roll averages or lot averages.

Can a tarp meet GSM but fail thickness?

Yes. GSM measures mass per unit area, while thickness measures the distance between surfaces under a defined pressure. Coating distribution, textile construction, embossing and measurement conditions can produce different thickness readings even when total GSM is within its agreed range.

Why do two thickness gauges give different results?

The presser-foot size, applied pressure, dwell time, instrument calibration, surface texture, specimen condition and exact test point can affect a flexible coated fabric reading. Use the same agreed method and equipment conditions when comparing suppliers or lots.

What is the difference between nominal width and usable width?

Nominal width identifies the product. Total width is the physical edge-to-edge measurement. Usable width is the portion that meets the agreed coating, edge and converting requirements. A buyer who needs a 2500 mm panel should normally protect the required usable width, not rely only on a general nominal figure.

Why is a finished tarp smaller than its listed cut size?

Edge folds, hems, welded or sewn overlaps and reinforcement consume part of the original panel. This is a fabrication allowance rather than an unexplained defect. When exact coverage matters, order by agreed finished dimensions after all seams and hems and attach a drawing.

Should finished-size tolerance be a percentage or a fixed unit?

Either can be appropriate. Percentages scale with large dimensions; fixed-unit limits can be clearer for small covers, pockets and hardware locations. Some projects use a percentage for overall length and width plus a fixed millimetre limit for grommet centres, cut-outs or connection points.

How many points should be measured across a roll?

The answer depends on roll width, property, method, lot size and risk. The important point is to define representative cross-width and lengthwise positions before inspection. Do not rely on one convenient centre point or change the sampling plan after seeing the results.
